What to Bring to a Family Session with Little Kids

What to bring to your family session is one of the most common questions I get – and I totally get it. You’re juggling nap schedules, wrangling outfits, and maybe wondering if you should pack snacks, props, or the entire contents of your minivan just in case.

So let’s go ahead and say this first: your kids don’t have to be perfectly behaved. Your hair doesn’t have to hold up in the wind. Your outfits don’t have to match Pinterest.

You don’t need a bag full of bribes or a three-page checklist.

What you do need? You. Your people. A little trust.

But if you are the type who likes to feel prepared (me too), here are a few simple things that can help your session go a little more smoothly:

1. Snacks (low-mess, toddler-friendly)

Something quick and not too messy – like Cheerios, fruit snacks, or a granola bar you can break into pieces – is always a good idea. Skip anything colorful or melty like chocolate. Anything that doesn’t leave bright fingers or sticky faces.

2. A favorite comfort item

If your child has a well-loved stuffy or blanket, bring it along. Even if we don’t use it in the photos, it can be helpful during transitions or if someone needs a little breather. And if we do use it? Those photos might end up being the ones you love the most.

3. Water + wipes

Nothing fancy – just enough to keep hands and faces clean if we need a quick reset. Wipes are especially great for things like snack crumbs, sticky fingers, or wiping away eye goobers (it happens). Water is always a good idea too, especially on warmer days or if someone needs a little refresh.

4. A small bag to stash the essentials

Toss your session stuff – snacks, wipes, water, comfort items – into one easy-to-carry bag so you’re not juggling things. It’s also a great spot for phones, wallets, and keys so they’re not showing up in pockets or making weird shapes under clothes. It’s best if it’s a bag you don’t mind setting on the ground.

What not to bring? Worry.

You’ve already done the hard part – you’re showing up. Some of the best moments happen in the chaos. A toddler clinging to a lovey. A kid refusing to let go of mom’s hand. A little wildness and a lot of love.

You bring the love. I’ll bring the calm. And we’ll get photos that tell the real story.
